Quantum Rydberg Radar
Rydberg states are highly excited states of an atom which can be easily configured via lasers. Carefully tuned, these atoms can be very sensitive to external fields or waves spanning a broad spectrum (MHz to THz). Rydberg atom-based detectors can be compact, low power, and highly reconfigurable or tunable. The tunability of the Rydberg receiver is based on how the atoms respond to properties of the laser light used. By using powerful satellite-based navigation and communication transmitters as illuminators, Rydberg receivers enable bistatic radar measurements spanning a very broad spectrum. Dr. Arumugam’s group at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory is investigating Rydberg based remote sensing for Earth Science applications. This presentation will provide a summary of the physics, concepts, and early findings.

Dr. Darmindra Arumugam is a senior research technologist at JPL with interest in atomic sensors for remote sensing, applied physics, and sensors. He is also the group supervisor for the Concepts and Formulation group in Section 334 at JPL. He received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University.
